First Quantum Minerals’ Phase 1 Completion – Zambia Operation
First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FQM) is an established and rapidly growing mining and metals company producing copper, nickel, gold, zinc and platinum group elements. The Company’s assets are located in Zambia, Spain, Mauritania, Australia, Finland, Turkey, Panama, Peru and Argentina.
MINEMAN is the leading software and services solution for logistics, marketing and revenue financials for concentrates and metals.
The Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is owned and operated by Kansanshi Mining PLC which is 80% owned by a First Quantum subsidiary. The mine is located approximately 10 kilometres north of the town of Solwezi and 180 kilometres to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. FQM’s Trident project is located approximately 150 kilometres west of Solwezi in north-west Zambia, is comprised of the Sentinel copper mine and the Enterprise nickel project.
MINEMAN implementation included Trident’s Sentinel Copper mine, the Kansanshi copper mine and the Kansanshi copper smelter. The implementation consisted of setting up two MINEMAN instances, one at the Trident mine site and one at Kansanshi copper mine to manage truck movements at each respective sites. The project was split into two phases with the aim of getting the concentrate logistics module operational as quickly as possible so as to address one of the most critical areas of KMP’s operations. The remainder of the functionality will be rolled-out as a second phase, which will include Marketing, Finance, Hedging and the Logistics for anode, cathode and dorè.
The system allows (i) planning of daily truck movements to both local third party smelters as well as the KMP smelter; (ii) creation of Unique Movement IDs for each truck to track weights and assays and (iii) importing of a daily vehicle load list provided by the transport company to record specific truck and driver details to assist with security checkpoints at the mine gate.
Both sites also have distinct concentrate stockpiles which need to be tracked independently. MINEMAN records movements in and out of these stockpiles and display them in the Concentrate Movement Report which is used by site personnel to monitor the levels of each of these stockpiles. As assays for each truck are recorded, a weighted average assay for each stockpile will be calculated based on FIFO allocation. End of Month surveyed data can also be recorded as well as adjustments to site stocks, so as to manage site inventory and concentrate movements on site.
MINEMAN will be globally used by FQM at its other operations by Q2/2016.
