Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Limited, based in Zambia, became the fourth Barrick site to implement the MINEMAN system in 2023, further strengthening MINEMAN’s footprint across the Barrick group.
At the time of implementation, other Barrick operations using MINEMAN included Nevada Gold Mines, Veladero and Pueblo Viejo. Since then, additional Barrick operations—Jabal Sayid and Bulyanhulu—have also adopted the MINEMAN platform.
About Lumwana
The Lumwana copper mine is a conventional open-pit (truck and shovel) operation located approximately 100 kilometres west of Solwezi in Zambia’s Copperbelt—one of the most prospective copper regions in the world.
Lumwana’s predominantly sulphide ore is processed through a conventional flotation plant, producing copper concentrate for export. Lumwana is a subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation.
Project Overview
Barrick Lumwana engaged MINEMAN to deliver a managed commercial solution to support and streamline its copper concentrate sales operations through the implementation of MINEMAN Release 7.
The project included ongoing support from the MINEMAN Managed Services team, who continue to assist Lumwana with daily commercial marketing and finance administration.
Scope of Implementation
The implementation included:
Managed Services Support: Complete remote commercial administrative and data entry support delivered by the MINEMAN Managed Services Team using the MINEMAN Marketing and Finance system.
Logistics System Replacement: Full truck and container management and reporting functionality, replacing the existing Copper Concentrate Logistics System, including delivery documentation, predefined signatories and management dashboards.
Stockpile Management: Stockpile management configuration and reporting to improve reconciliation and inventory visibility.
SAP Integration: Integration with SAP to generate standardised Sales and Mark-to-Market journals aligned with corporate accounting requirements.
Group Standardisation and Cloud Alignment: Configuration aligned with Barrick corporate standards and consolidation with Barrick’s AWS cloud-based database infrastructure.
Go-Live and Expansion
Project requirements were signed off in February 2023. Following collaborative implementation, onsite training and User Acceptance Testing (UAT), the system successfully went live on 23 September 2023.
Since go-live, the flexibility of the MINEMAN platform has enabled Lumwana to efficiently pivot from managing copper concentrate sales to also managing tolling arrangements and copper metal sales—demonstrating the scalability of the system and its ability to adapt to evolving commercial strategies.
